Math is a tricky subject. Either your child has a natural aptitude for it or has begun to show disinterest in the subject. It is important to develop a positive relationship with math right from the beginning because this disinterest which seems harmless early on could accumulate and result in absolute hatred for the subject.
Here are 3 ways to boost your child's interest in math:
1. Be consistent: Do some number work every day. Do it with a book and pencil or better still without it when travelling, playing or even watching TV. Counting number of cars, trees; estimating time - using countdown on TV, observing patterns, dealing with money, measures with cups and spoons, makes it a part of life than something serious to be studied in schools. Working and playing with numbers even for ten minutes every day is better than working the whole weekend on it.
2. Make it enjoyable: Number work should be fun and preferably initiated by the child. Use stuff that your child plays with: legos, building blocks, pasta, marbles, pebbles, counting cars and trees outside, even e-games and apps, whatever makes the child take interest in numbers. Just ensure that you stop when your child loses interest. Otherwise, they will resist and lose interest. So let go when it is not enjoyed by your child.
3. Stop comparing and assessing: Every child is different and has a different rate of learning. Don’t get impatient if he is not as correct or as fast as his sister or friend. Sometimes parents who are not comfortable in math express anxiety when their child does math work and unconsciously transfer this stress to their child. Reward the child for trying the sum – for asking you how to do it - not just for getting it right. Be patient with your child and see your child's confidence and interest grow.
To summarise, children do not love or hate any subject from the beginning. It is the experiences with the subject that gradually make them like or hate it. Create stories that the child will like to retell in relation to a subject and watch the confidence boost!
